If there is one pop video you watch today, make it this new one from London-based Parisian duo, The Penelopes.

There is so much to love here. First up, the video for ‘Tina’ contains footage from Asia Argento’s directorial feature Misunderstood, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Asia Argento is the daughter of Italian director, film director and screenwriter Dario Argento, who directed and co-wrote the 1977 horror classic, Suspiria.

For those of you in the US, you can find Misunderstood on Netflix. As with the band’s single, the film tells the story of a young girl and the struggle of growing into her teens. Inspired by the screenplay, The Penelopes wrote the song, the first version of which actually features in the film.

If you look hard enough you can find Axel and Vincent cameos throughout the movie on screen and in posters. The band changed the song title to ‘Tina’ as a tribute to their friend Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club) who they felt shared the tenacity and brilliance of the girl in the lyrics.

The song itself perfectly blends melancholia with uplifting melodies. Think Leonard Cohen meets The Killers. Let’s not forget that this is the band that turned in a brilliant remix of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’ a few years ago.

With new singles launching throughout the year, culminating in a new album and European tour, The Penelopes are making 2017 an exciting year for music.
