Actor Zac Efron has revealed that he felt challenged by his new movie role, claiming the film to be a serial killer story that we’ve rarely seen before.
Efron plays notorious mass murderer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, a biographical crime thriller film which is directed by Joe Berlinger. The movie is released in UK cinemas this Friday.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile peers into the charismatic side of Bundy – the side he showed to friends, coworkers, and eventually television audiences across the United States. He was an expert at exploiting his good looks and charming personality to win the trust of many women, including his long-time girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer.
Liz (played by Lily Collins) is starting a new chapter in her life. She’s a young and newly single mother raising her toddler daughter on her own.

At the insistence of her best friend Joanna (Angela Sarafyan), the two go out for a night on the town to see where the evening takes them. Eager to find her friend a new man, Joanna spots the devilishly handsome Ted (Zac Efron) standing at the back of the bar. He seems to only have eyes for Liz despite every woman in the room vying for his attention. The cautious and shy Liz takes a leap of faith and the two hit it off on the dance floor; she’s completely smitten.
The more she gets to know Ted, the more she falls madly in love. He’s smart, affectionate, attentive, and kind to her daughter. The two have built a seemingly perfect picture of domestic bliss.
One night, while Ted is away attending law school at an out-of-state University, he’s arrested and found guilty of kidnapping and assaulting a young college woman. He assures Liz that it’s clearly a case of mistaken identity, but soon after he is accused and charged with a grisly murder of another young woman, and another, and another.
As the evidence continues to mount against Ted, Liz’s concern gradually turns to paranoia. Torn between the happy life she thought she finally found and the grisly truth that is slowly unfolding before her, Liz must decide if Ted truly is the victim he claims to be, or actually guilty as charged.
Boys On Film caught up with Extremely Wicked director Joe Berlinger, Zac Efron and Lily Collins at the movie’s European Premiere to find out more.
