Shakespears Sister today announces their official reunion as a band, twenty-six years after they originally disbanded.

Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey will release a hits compilation, Singles Party on 19th July. The album features two new tracks ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ and ‘C U Next Tuesday’, as well as classic hits from the duo’s back catalogue. They embark on the Shakespears Sister Ride Again tour this October and November playing an extensive run of UK shows, including a night at The London Palladium.

As well as the new tracks ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ and ‘C U Next Tuesday’, Singles Party is made up of classic Shakespears Sister singles, including ‘Stay’, ‘You’re History’, ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’, and ‘I Don’t Care’. The deluxe version of the album features another unreleased track ‘Cat Worship’ and remixes of ‘You’re History’ and ‘You Made Me Come To This’ remixed by Catz ‘n Dogz and HMD Pulsatron respectively.

Shakespears Sister’s debut album, 1989’s Sacred Heart was a top ten record and spawned the band’s first hit single, ‘You’re History’, which also went top ten. Even greater success followed with a second album, Hormonally Yours, in 1992; amongst its hit singles ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’ and ‘Stay’, which remained at number one for eight weeks.

The idea for Shakespears Sister began when Marcella was introduced to Dave Stewart and Siobhan Fahey – who was looking to do her own album after leaving Bananarama – via a friend of hers, Richard Feldman.

Back in October 2015 I met up with Marcella to chat about her solo album, Gray Matterz. Marcella spoke in detail about the process of working on her solo work, but also shared some recollections of her time with Shakespears Sister.

I wasn’t expecting ‘Stay’ to be such a big hit. Hormonally Yours was a concept album. It was about this 1950s B-movie called Cat Women of the Moon. We were going to try and buy the rights to it. The whole movie inspired us, so each song is about a scene in the film. ‘Stay’ tells the story of me singing to an Earthling that I’d fallen in love with, and I’m begging him to stay with me, which he didn’t end up doing in the end. Bastard!

The concept of ‘Stay’ and its promo video gave comedy duo French & Saunders some big ideas for a sketch on their hit BBC TV show, which showed them poking fun out of the band in one of their regular and popular spoofs.

Any time a comedian does a spoof of you is when you know that you’re really doing well. The first time I met Jennifer Saunders, she was really apologetic. The sketch is funny to watch because I come across as some doolally chick just walking around not knowing what she’s singing. I thought it was hysterical!

Shakespears Sister sold over a million albums, collected a Brit award for best video for ‘Stay’ and an Ivor Novello award for Outstanding Collection of Songs for the band’s second album, 1992’s Hormonally Yours. The pair went onto headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in 1992 and supported Prince at Celtic Park at Prince’s personal request.

The band famously parted ways in 1993 with reports of a feud between the two, which caused much bitterness. In recent months, the duo have healed the feud and are excited to be working together again.
